WHAT DO THEY REPLACE? Plastic bags! used for small garbage cans. We can do better, read F**k Plastic. Cleaning your compost bin on a regular basis! MATERIALS World Centric® waste bags are made from a mixture of synthetic and starch based plastics and printed with soy based inks.
ECO GEEK From World Centric: Instead of using plastic made from petrochemicals and fossil fuels, compostable plastics are derived from renewable materials like corn, potato, and tapioca starches, cellulose, soy protein, and lactic acid. Compostable plastics are non-toxic and decompose back into carbon dioxide, water, and biomass when composted.
At What's Good, we understand that our trash isn't necessarily going to an industrial compost facility, it's going to a landfill. So which bag do you choose? One made from virgin plastic? One made from recycled plastic? Or one made from renewable materials? We say, the better option is the compostable, plant based plastic. As World Centric goes on to say:
If you are choosing between certified compostable bioplastics that cannot be composted and traditional plastics, thelife cycle analysis datashows that products made from a renewable resource, not petroleum-based plastic, are the most sustainable choice. This is true even if no composting option is available and the item must be sent to the landfill.
Instead of using petroleum-based plastics that create toxicity and environmental pollution, organizations and consumers can choose products made from compostable, renewable, and non-toxic bioplastics like PLA.
