Meet The Pink Fund: What’s Good Nonprofit Partner of the Month
What’s Good knew we wanted to support breast cancer-focused charity as our Nonprofit Partner of the Month for October. Yes, for the obvious reason that it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but also because it’s an issue that is close to so many of us, including our founder, who has one close relative currently going through treatment and another who has been a pioneer in mammography.
What we didn’t know was who we were going to support. Research is important, but so many individual and collective breast cancer fundraising efforts benefit research. So, we did a little research of our own for a national organization helping patients and found The Pink Fund.
Diagnosed with breast cancer during a job transition, Molly MacDonald quickly became unemployed and unemployable. Without an income and a $1,300 monthly expense for health insurance, Molly’s home went into foreclosure, her vehicle was nearly repossessed, and she was threatened with utility shut offs. While in treatment she met many other working women who were experiencing similar scenarios: unable to work, plowing through savings and worried they would not be able to weather treatment financially. Talk about STRESS. Or, as The Pink Fund likes to call it, cancer-related financial toxicity. Exactly what you don’t need when fighting cancer. Molly didn’t want anyone to face the kind of toxic stress that she and her family endured and vowed to do something about it.
The Pink Fund launched formally on October 1, 2006, and provides financial support to help meet basic needs, decrease stress, and allow breast cancer patients in active treatment to focus on healing. Their 90-day grant program meets patients’ critical expenses for housing, transportation, utilities, and insurance.
It’s vitally important, because cancer isn’t just about physical health. It also deeply impacts your financial bottom line, which in turn impacts your stress levels, and your ability to heal.
Here’s what Kerry, a beneficiary of The Pink Fund, had to say, “I am so thankful to The Pink Fund! They saved me financially right when I needed it. Cancer is physically and mentally torture at some points, and The Pink Fund helped me feel at ease knowing I don't have to pay rent for the next two months. I am forever grateful to this organization! I can't wait one day to be in a position to help back. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!”
With every order this month, you help What’s Good in supporting The Pink Fund during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this way your purchase does double the good – for the environment and for breast cancer patients.
