    PLASTIC-FREE LAUNDRY POWDER

Meliora Laundry Powder is an awesome people- and planet-friendly laundry option. It only contains what you need to clean your clothes—and nothing that you don't. It's free of synthetic fragrances, dyes, preservatives, and brighteners.

Each pre-packed bag = 35 oz. (for 128 loads in a high-efficiency washer, or 64 standard washer loads). You are welcome to buy it by the ounce, as well.

NEW PACKAGING! In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint and to reduce the amount of packaging we all have to deal with (no matter how good), we've decided to carry the LAVENDER powder in bulk. The only change for you is a lower price and  instead of a metal and paper or paperboard container, you'll receive your powder in a sturdy, recycled natural kraft paper bag lined with a plant based film. The entire bag is compostable after you tear off the tin tie (which we think you should keep and reuse for chip bags, electric cords, etc.).

    WHAT DOES IT REPLACE?
Heavy plastic bottles of chemical loaded, over fragranced traditional laundry jugs.

    BORING (BUT USEFUL) STUFF
Each bag contains 35oz. If you choose our by-the-ounce option, we'll put just that number of ounces in the bag.

Instructions: Add Laundry Powder directly to washer with clothes, NOT to drawer. For HE Washers, use 1/2 Tablespoon. For Standard Washers, use 1 Tablespoon.

    INGREDIENTS
LAVENDER: Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Carbonate, Vegetable Soap [Sodium Cocoate, Glycerin, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Water], Organic Lavandula Hybrida Grosso (Lavender) Oil

    NERD ALERT
-Sodium Bicarbonate: Also known as baking soda, sodium bicarbonate is an odor neutralizer.

-Sodium Carbonate: Also known as washing soda or soda ash, sodium carbonate is a pH adjuster. It raises the pH of the washing water, which results in more effective cleaning. For this reason it's often referred to as a laundry 'booster'. Vegetable Soap:

-Sodium Cocoate: This is the chemical name of saponified (that is, 'made into soap') coconut oil. It's the chemical that grabs onto both dirt and water to do the cleaning.

-Glycerin: This substance is chemically a type of alcohol and is naturally created when the oil is converted into soap. Glycerin is known for skin-softening abilities and is an effective solvent, meaning it can dissolve substances such as stains and dirts.

-Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil: There is a small amount of coconut oil left in the soap after conversion to sodium cocoate. This is because we use sodium hydroxide, or lye, in the conversion process and leaving excess oil ensures there is no remaining lye in the finished product. Some soapmakers refer to this as 'superfatting' and more oil remaining results in a softer, more moisturizing soap. Our coconut soap has only a small amount of excess oil, so it is not the luxurious body type and more of a 'get the job done' soap.

-Water: Water is used in the soapmaking process as a substance that dissolves lye and then is a medium so the lye can reach all of the oil to react. After being useful in this process, the water is allowed to evaporate from the soap over a period of several weeks, and the resulting dried soap has very little water. There is only about 5% water remaining in the finished soap, thus making it more shelf stable than a liquid soap that would require a preservative due to the high (about 60%) water.

    ABOUT THE COMPANY
Kate and Mike are the proudly uncool and perpetually curious engineers who founded, own, and operate Meliora Cleaning Products. Meliora (meh-lee-OR-ah) is Latin for “better” and better is what Kate and Mike set out to do. Here's how they tell it:

Better isn’t just in our name; it is a reminder that every day we can improve on the status quo by offering cleaning products that are better for our customers and on the environment.

To have the most impact we choose to align with organizations that support what we believe and amplify our vision. Our B Corp Certification is a third-party evaluation and audit of our business practices; it highlights strengths in company ownership and governance (woman-owned), labor practices (living wages) and our product itself (low impact products and packaging). Through partnerships with 1% For the Planet and Women’s Voices for the Earth, we commit 2% of our annual revenues to environmental and charitable nonprofits.  The MADE SAFE® seal signifies that our products and ingredients have been examined for whether they build up in the environment, our bodies, and aquatic toxicity. And Leaping Bunny is the highest standard for companies that are committed to using no animal testing.  As we continue to grow, the foundations for our business must continue to meet our own expectations to be the very best company we can be.

We Make Everything In Our Own Factory in Chicago. Our factory on the West Side of Chicago does everything from making soap to packaging finished product. Everything we make, we make ourselves and we are proud that we have developed every detail of our process.  Through understanding each cycle our product goes through we are able to examine the environmental impact each product creates, thus able to remove unnecessary waste along the way.  It is important that our workers are paid a living wage, they are integral in making improvements and introducing new products.

Their big three rules guides each new product introduction:

    • It WORKS to get your home and clothes clean
    • PEOPLE-FRIENDLY, so it's ok to have around your home
    • PLANET-FRIENDLY, so you can be confident that what goes down your drain won't cause any problems

    Meliora Laundry Powder

I have been using this for a while due to my atopic dermatitis and it cleans great and does not aggravate my sensitive skin. So glad I can buy locally now!

It makes us happy to know that we can be a resource for you. Thank you so much for making time in your busy day to share your story with us. :)

    Great soap

My household have been using the unscented (not green) stuff for years. The last few years I have switched to stuff that is a little greener with not the greatest results (husband and kid are always getting into something!). This Meliora Lavender laundry powder gets the job done. The scent is not there after the laundry cycle, which I am totally fine with (refreshing when doing endless loads of laundry!). It seems to clean very well (even in cold). I have used the laundry stain stick from them for a few months and it works well for those tough stains.
Side note: anyone with issues of it dissolving, try running a clean cycle on your washing machine. I use pure citric acid powder and some baking soda. I do this once a month.

Lisa, Thank you for the informative review. While we don't hear about any residue from this product, we're told that the culprit behind residue can be too much powder or an over packed washer. We'll add your tip to the list.

    Easy to open!

Big packaging improvement! The paper tops on the paper cans I got before were stuck on SO tightly I had to cut an opening and pour into an old plastic jar. Does not dissolve well in cold water.

    Great product- needs better packaging

Love the product! I have small hands so opening and closing the lid makes was a little difficult- will move it to a different container to make it easier for me to pour the product into my HE washer !!!

    Ana,
Thank you for taking the time to review Meliora Laundry Powder. The Good News is that Meliora just released new packaging!!! Hopefully, you'll find it easier on the next go round. Alternatively, we offer Tru Earth Laundry Strips — perfect for small hands, arthritic hands, and people that just don't want to lug big boxes or jugs. Thanks again for doing one more green thing.

    Wish the Lavender scent lasted

I love lavender and thought this powder would be perfect for washing sheets. I know they are clean however, there is no lasting lavender scent. I am disappointed.

Sally, thank you for writing in. For the very reason you're disappointed, is the very reason so many of our customers gravitate toward this laundry powder. Some want a powerful punch of scent while others prefer a subtle hello. We'll pass your feedback on to Meliora, maybe they could offer a stronger version? In the mean time, if you prefer a stronger scent and have lavender essential oil, you can add it to your wash via your drawer or dab it on your dryer balls. Thanks again.
