Our featured charity during July is the Plastic Free Foundation, an organization committed to eliminating global plastic waste. Their annual key initiative is the Plastic Free July® campaign, a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to end plastic pollution so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and communities. By sharing ideas, positive actions and stories of change, Plastic Free July helps people and organizations “choose to refuse” single-use plastic for an entire month and beyond.
WHY?
- Currently, annual global plastic production is around 380 million tons (and increasing) with more than 90% of this becoming waste
- 91% of the global population supports policies and action to reduce plastic waste
IMPACT
The Plastic Free July (PFJ) movement is recognized globally as an annual month where citizens, businesses and governments come together to take action to reduce plastic waste, creating a social and behavioral change movement.
Fun Fact... It's our 3rd year taking this challenge and our 3rd year supporting this movement by donating $1 of every order we receive in July — online and in our store.
In 2021 alone:
- 140 million of individuals and organizations from 190 countries participated in PFJ (including What’s Good!)
- 29% of all global consumers (at least 313 million people) were aware of the campaign
- 301 million everyday plastic items were collectively refused
- Landfill waste was reduced by 2.1 million tons
- Potential global media reach of 4.1 billion people
In the past 11 years, PFJ has reduced global plastic demand by:
- 2.3 % of all bottled water
- 3.1% of all fruit and vegetable packaging
- 4% of all plastic straws
