  • FEATURED NON-PROFIT

    May 31, 2024

    FEATURED NON-PROFIT
As part of our commitment to being a not-just-for-profit business, What’s Good selects a different charity each few months and donates a portion of every order we receive to that organization.

Our featured charity during June & July 2024 is the Plastic Free Foundation, an organization committed to eliminating global plastic waste. Their annual key initiative is the Plastic Free July® campaign, a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to end plastic pollution so we can have cleaner streets, oceans, and communities. By sharing ideas, positive actions and stories of change, Plastic Free July helps people and organizations “choose to refuse” single-use plastic for an entire month and beyond.

    WHY?
    • In 2022, the world produced 400.3 million metric tons of plastic, which is a 1.6% increase from 2021. This is a significant increase from 1950, when the world only produced 2 million tons of plastic
    • According to a 2022 Plastic Free July report, 87% of people globally support policies and actions to reduce plastic waste.
    • A 2024 WWF survey found that 85% of people want a global ban on single-use plastics, with support being highest in Latin America and Africa.
    • An Ipsos survey from April 2024 found that 87% of people in 32 countries agree that global plastic production should be reduced, and 85% agree that unnecessary single-use plastics should be banned.
    IMPACT
The Plastic Free July (PFJ) movement is recognized globally as an annual month where citizens, businesses and governments come together to take action to reduce plastic waste, creating a social and behavioral change movement.

Fun Fact... It's our 4th year taking this challenge and our 4th year supporting this movement by donating a portion of every order we receive in June & July — online and in our store.

    In 2023 alone:
    • An estimated 89 million individuals participated globally, reaching people in over 190 countries from 14,224 workplaces, 7,248 communities and schools, and 5,835 cafes and retail stores (including What’s Good!).
87% of participants made at least one lasting change.
    • In 2023, participants reduced their households’:
      • Non-recoverable waste by 900 million kg.
      • Recyclable waste by 700 million kg.
      • Plastic consumption by 240 million kg.
    • Participants were 25% more likely to adopt plastic-reducing practices than the global average.
    • Strong public support for plastic reduction policies was evident, with 85% backing such initiatives.
    • The top 6 countries in participation were China, India, USA, South Korea, Italy, and Brazil.
In the past 11 years, PFJ has reduced global plastic demand by:
    • 2.3 % of all bottled water
    • 3.1% of all fruit and vegetable packaging
    • 4% of all plastic straws

Over the last 5 years alone:

    • Participants have collectively avoided 10 billion kgs of waste, including 1.4 billion kgs of plastic
    • The campaign has inspired 223 million behavior changes, setting a benchmark for behavior change projects.
    • An average reduction of 18 kg in waste and recycling per person per year has been achieved, meaning an incredible 4.1% decrease in waste generation.

We hope your What’s Good purchases make your heart full knowing that we’ll donate a portion of every order you place to support the good work toward eliminating plastic waste.

If you’re new to What’s Good, this is just part of our giving program. Among other donations, we also give 1% of our revenue to One Percent for the Planet. And, with every used box shipped (pick this option at check out), we'll plant one tree through One Tree Planted.

Consider also taking the challenge by joining 100+ million participants worldwide in Plastic Free July and sign up here. You can do it at work or at home, or both, for a day, a week or the entire month!

Together we do more good. Thank you!
