We love this part of the job because we get to shine the spotlight on people who make good products and add more good to the world. Even though we ask each of our makers the same 6 questions, we learn something new— every time. You might too.
This month, we're featuring Cyndi Prince, CEO & Founder of LooHoo.
Like many moms, Cyndi is careful not to expose her family to household cleaners that may contain toxic chemicals that can cause a serious illness. Cyndi is dedicated to educating herself in order to seek healthier products to protect the health and happiness of her family. With that motivation, she created LooHoo Wool Dryer Balls in 2010, and has helped thousands of people protect their family's health by providing a natural alternative to toxic dryer sheets. What's more, Cyndi's dryer balls are made in Maine, USA with 100% domestic wool from a historic wool mill not far from LooHoo headquarters. Her efforts in finding healthy products for her family has a cascading impact benefiting the environment and her local economy.
So, without further ado, here's our Q & A with Cyndi:
What's Good: What does being eco-friendly mean to you?
Cyndi: Being eco-friendly means making choices that help create a healthy home environment and that helps protect the planet.
What's Good: What's your biggest climate change fear/concern?
Cyndi: Extreme weather. We just had two major rain and wind storms in Maine causing severe coastal flooding. It appears that extreme weather is affecting all areas of the globe and will greatly impact all of us.
What's Good: If our readers could only do one green thing, what would it be and why?
Cyndi: Start small, do your research and talk to the people you trust. Shopping at a local refill or an eco shop is a great place and the people who work there often love sharing about products they recommend and love. If switching to environmentally friendly products feels daunting, start with one room and focus on each product you use. The laundry room is a great place and LooHoo wool dryer balls are an ideal easy swap.
What's Good: What's the biggest 'bad habit' YOU have as it relates to eco/sustainable lifestyle that is a challenge for you? (Flying, eating meat, ziplock baggies, take out food, etc.)
Cyndi: At the moment, I drive a gas-powered car. I’d love to switch to a hybrid or an electric vehicle. Also, our lawn mower is gas-powered as well and I’d love to switch to an electric model.
What's Good: What started you on your eco-journey?
Cyndi: Just before our son was born, I learned that most dryer sheets contain toxic chemicals that are especially harmful to babies and children. I was determined to create a healthier home for our family, even if that meant hours of researching and coming up with my own solution. After exploring a safer way to naturally soften laundry, and much trial and error, I created LooHoo Wool Dryer Balls.
What's Good: What is your favorite aspect of the eco products you make or one in particular?
Cyndi: When our company was formed in 2010, I decided that I would use only domestic wool in order to support American sheep farmers, the U.S. Farming Industry, and the local economy. Less than 100 miles from our headquarters in Camden, Maine, is a historic wool mill where we get all of our wool. I am beyond proud to say we are Made in the USA!
Thanks so much, Cyndi. We're so grateful for your commitment to helping us create natural, healthier homes. You are What's Good.
